Seriously, iPhone? AutoCorrect Fixed Yet?

Apple’s iPhone reaches its fourth birthday in barely a month. (Seriously that’s it???) It’s currently in its fifth generation.

As we probably all know, it was the first real smart phone and remains by far the coolest. I remember when the iPhone came out: it practically stopped the Yuppy First World. People paid like $400 for the first one? We paid $50 for my husband’s 3S earlier this year, along with a 2-year AT&T contract. And we HATED cell phones.

So, after all this time and all this money, WHY THE HELL HASN’T APPLE FIXED ITS SPELL CHECK?

It’s no longer funny. The Internet sites that sprang up around the phenomenon are now old hat. Tonight I found myself trying to spell “girly” and eventually just calling my friend instead of texting. WTF? This isn’t cool. It’s no longer amusing. It’s not Apple.

Apple is way cooler and smoother than this. As a lifelong Mac dorkette, I’m ashamed.

Fortunately, the friend I tried to text (another dorkette — we should coin the phrase and start a band) tipped me off on a little secret … at least, a secret to me. You can turn off Auto Correct on an iPhone. It’s pathetic that we have to. This is something I normally reserve for Word products. But until Apple finally gets off its duff, desperate times call for desperate measures.

Here’s what you do. Go to Settings -> General -> Keyboard menu -> Auto Correction. I went ahead and turn off all four options starting with “auto”.  Easy as pie.

So there you go. I still love my iPhone. I know it’s not perfect. I’m still annoyed that my 4G pre-release (not 4S) doesn’t do Siri voice control. It only has a preliminary version. Oh, and I’m not sure where my camera’s zoom went with my upgrade to iOS5 … but I’m still a Mac dorkette for life.

Unless those Auto Correct morons take over the company. Then I’m bringing out my ol’ Iowa pitch fork.
